Consumers have filed a total of 4 complaints related to BMW AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION.
I brought my car in after a faulty airbag light went off. Was notified by bmw that the seat sensor was faulty causing the airbag to shut off. This fault is well-known to bmw and i wrote a complaint based on my initial contact that bmw would not take responsibility. I received a call back from bmw about the complaint made to them in which they stated because i have an extended warranty they will take no ownership or responsibility for the reported problem. I was told at the dealership that this common seat sensor issue can be affected by cell phones being placed on the seat and moisture (neither of which applied to this circumstance). It is troubling to know that frequency interference can fault such a critical component and i advised bmw corp during my phone call that proper shielding of electronic components to prevent frequency interference should be corrected. Safety components should be covered by manufacturer when it pertains to the safety of the drivers. The representative continued to press that bmw would take no ownership or responsibility for the faulty equipment but would document this in the formal complaint. There is no resolve available through bmw according to the representative.
While driving message will pop up regarding passanger's seat belt and even driver was fasten the seat belt message will pop up in the screen to fasten the seat belt. It will start after 20 minutes of driving.
Seat belt twist into the re-tractor back of the seat and cannot be untwisted because the twist remains behind the seat from the floor to the top of the seat. Taken to the dealer but the dealer denies that this is possible claiming someone must have messed with them installing them backwards. I have another issue too with the seat mat on the passenger side throwing an error message where the airbag will turn off with a passenger in the seat. Dealership claims it's do to moister and refuses to fix it unless pay 1500 dollars. This component is faulty but they are blaming me and i did not spill anything into the seat it was purchased this way. This component should not fail so easily even if the seat was damp. Should i have to pay 1500 dollars every time someones butt sweats into my seat? That's ridiculous. The sensor will fail over bumps with a passenger in the seat regardless of speed. Only heavier passengers over about 240 lbs trigger the error.. It will reset itself once the trip is completed. But for the duration of the trip the passenger will not be protected from the airbags in the event of collision.
PASSENGER OCCUPANCY SENSOR FAILURE. REPORTED UNDER WARRANTY WHEN PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT, WAS TOLD NOTHING WAS WRONG. PROBLEM NOW PERSISTENT AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED AND FAILED STATE INSPECTION, CAN'T DRIVE UNTIL IT'S FIXED. THIS WAS A RECALL ITEM ON 2005-2010 X3'S AND SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH MANY MODELS AND YEARS OF BMW. CAR WARNS ABOUT PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEM FAILURE, RED AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON. CONSTANTLY CHIMES WHILE DRIVING.
