Roads were clear but edges slushy. Temp was 27 degrees. Drove 2 miles at 40ish mph to starbucks, got coffee. Normal rear wheel drive traction issues when changing lanes, etc. I was driving carefully and about 5 mph under what everyone else was doing. About a mile away from the coffee drive through, i changed lanes (right to left) over a pile of slush... Normal mild traction issues. Was in the left lane and had "recovered" when suddenly more yellow traction warning lights came on (one on drivers control panel, one on the info panel)... Reading it later, it said to drive gently, the traction control system was recalibrating. I am a very good driver... I lost complete control. I was steering into the skid, but it didn't feel like a normal skid. It didn't slow (i know not to brake - and there wasn't any traffic to worry about). Completely into the right breakdown lane, recovered somewhat, into the left lane until i finally gently hit the curb at about 10 mph. I was going about 35 mph when the nightmare started. Even after gaining some modicum of control, i couldn't go more than about 20 mph without completely losing any kind of traction control. Pulled over, turned the car off/on... No change. Pulled over, reset the car by walking 15 yds away with the keys for 15 minutes, i could pull out and drive normally for 100 yds, then the "recalibrating" notification would come on and i would lose control. I was on 4 lane highway with median. Even after waiting 2 hours for a tow, the pavement was dry and i had no control.
Power steering failure while in motion - operating the vehicle on public roadway - making it difficult and dangerous to navigate a turn. No warning lights appeared.
Passenger restraint system malfunctions with seat belt on.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 BMW i3. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CHARGING PORT OVERHEATED WHILE CHARGING AND MELTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BMW OF ROCHESTER HILLS, 45550 DEQUINDRE RD, SHELBY CHARTER TWP, MI 48317, AND WAS DIAGNOSED BUT THE CONTACT WAS NOT AWARE WHAT WAS THE DIAGNOSTIC. Lost power steering as i was leaving my house, making car very difficult to control. Thinking i had a flat tire, i turned around and returned home. Shut down the car, checked the tires (they were fine), restarted it, and power steering returned. This happened twice within a few days.
ONLY 5 YEARS OLD 41K MILES, MINT CONDITION, WHILE DRIVING THE LIGHT CAME ON SAYING "DRIVER RESTRAINT SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. AFTER CHECKING ALL THE i3 BLOGS THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING ISSUE. I TOOK MY CAR OVER TO BMW TODAY, THEY LOOKED AT IT AND SAID THE AIRBAG HAS MALFUNCTIONED SAME THING AS THE BLOGS ARE OUTLINING. I WAS ADVISED BUT THE SERVICE PERSON THAT IT WOULD BE 1800.00 I TOLD HIM THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE I3 AND ITS ALL OVER THE BLOGS, HE ACKNOWLEDGED HIS AWARENESS, IN ADDITION AIRBAGS SHOULD BE GOOD FOR 10 YEARS / GUARANTEED? ANYWAY I EMAILED THE FOLLOWING BMW NORTH AMERICAN MANAGEMENT ASKING WHY THIS IS NOT A RECALL. BERNHARD KUHNT - PRESIDENT AND CEO OF NORTH AMERICA/BMW GROUP REGION AMERICAS RICHARD HART - WARRANTY DEPARTMENT HEAD NORTH AMERICA SHAUN BUGBEE - EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT BMW THE HAVE JUST BEEN ALLOWING PEOPLE TO FIX THEIR DEFECTIVE AIRBAG, AS THEY INSTALLED SUBSTANDARD EQUIPMENT ON A $50K CAR. ANYWAY THIS NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO I HAVE PICTURES OF THE WARNING BUT IT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO UPDATE AS THEY ARE TOO BIG AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO COMPRESS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND SERVICE..
Cruise control deactivates for no reason causing sudden deceleration. Occurs randomlyn during city and highway driving. This has been happening for months. Bmw dealer has recibrated the sensor and updated the software. No improvement.
The driver's side airbag indicator illuminated upon vehicle startup. The dealer diagnosed that there was a fault in the system and that the airbag might not deploy in a collision. This failure made the vehicle unsafe to drive.
I CAME OUT OF THE PUBLIC GARAGE WHERE I CHARGED MY 2018 BMW i3'S AT A CHARGE POINT STATION FOR A LITTLE LESS THAN 4 HOURS (ABOUT 47 MILES RANGE), AND SUDDENLY WHEN STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, A BIG RED ERROR MESSAGE CAME UP ON THE DASHBOARD (DRIVETRAIN SOMETHING....) AND THE CAR STOPPED. I TRIED TO RESTART IT A FEW TIMES AND EVENTUALLY IT STARTED AGAIN AND ALLOWED ME TO GO BACK HOME. I READ A FEW THINGS ONLINE CONFIRMING THAT THERE IS NO WARNING MESSAGE AND THAT THE CAR CAN JUST STOP LIKE THAT AND I'M VERY CONCERNED THAT IT HAPPEN ON A FREEWAY WHEN DRIVING WITH MY KIDS IN IT. THIS IS NOT SAFE!!!
While driving the console had a message: "drivetrain malfunction". I was able to coast over to the side of the road but could accelerate after the message on the console. Very dangerous situation. No warning, once the message appeared on the console the car would not accelerate.
Every 3 to 21 days, my steering pulls hard to the left. This occurs on flat roads on dry pavement. I have to pull the steering wheel hard to the right to keep the vehicle going straight at city driving speeds (0-35 mph). On one occasion this occurred while on the freeway driving at 70 mph. Tire pressures are all within spec and tires are in great shape. After stopping and restarting the car, it sometimes will go away. In looking at the bmw recalls and technical notes, they have no solution to this problem and call it a software issue. This has happened to me at least 6 times.
On the way back home from work, steering felt quite heavy and it kept pulling towards the right side. I initially thought i had a flat tire but the tire pressure was normal. Driving back home on freeway felt very unsafe as it was quite unsteady at speeds greater than 30mph
THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) IN THE i3 IS SINGLE CAMERA BASED, AND WILL DEACTIVATE DURING A NUMBER OF CONDITIONS (SUCH AS DRIVING INTO DIRECT SUNLIGHT WHICH BLINDS THE CAMERA.) THIS IS A DESIGN LIMITATION, BUT NOT THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN ACC DEACTIVATES, THE CAR IMMEDIATELY GOES INTO FULL REGEN BRAKING WITHOUT WARNING. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS IS A SUDDEN AND SIGNIFICANT DECELERATION THAT POSES A SAFETY HAZARD (BEING REAR ENDED).
On a freeway driving around 65mph front car came to sudden stop so applied brakes at full strength but car continued at the same speed for few seconds and then brakes took effect but it was too late by then. There seems to be some sort of lag between when brake pedal pressed and actually breaks get applied to slow down vehicle. All 4 tires are new and servicing done 4 months back. *tr
STEERING BECOMES LOPSIDED, IT'S LOOSE TO TURN ONE WAY, AND HARD TO TURN THE OTHER WAY, AS IF ONE OF THE FRONT TIRES IS FLAT. THE CAR WILL TEND TO VEER LEFT OR RIGHT, AND I HAVE TO PULL HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO KEEP IT GOING STRAIGHT. THERE IS NO CONSISTENCY AS TO WHETHER IT VEERS LEFT OR RIGHT, AND THE DIRECTION CHANGES INTERMITTENTLY. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ALSO INTERMITTENTLY, SOMETIMES EVERY FEW DAYS OR EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON RESOLVES THE PROBLEM, BUT THEN THE SAME PROBLEM EVENTUALLY OCCURS AGAIN SOMETIME LATER. THIS IS MOST LIKELY A SOFTWARE ISSUE. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME BEHAVIOR ON i3'S ONLINE AND ON NHTSA WEBSITE. THIS IS CLEARLY A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, AND BMW SHOULD ADDRESS IT RIGHT AWAY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT LEASED A 2018 BMW i3 EQUIPPED WITH BRIDGESTONE TIRES, TIRE LINE: ECOPIA, SIZE: 175/55/R20, DOT NUMBER: (NOT AVAILABLE). THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 TO 65 MPH THE PASSENGER?S SIDE REAR TIRE SUSTAINED A BLOWOUT. THE CONTACT MOVED THE VEHICLE ONTO THE ROAD SHOULDER AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A TIRE REPAIR FACILITY. THE DRIVER?S AND PASSENGER?S SIDE REAR TIRE WERE REPLACED. ADDITIONALLY, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER?S AND PASSENGER?S SIDE FRONT TIRES WERE PREVIOUSLY REPLACED ALSO DUE TO BLOWOUTS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 26,000. THE VIN WAS INVALID.
When the vehicle is in eco pro plus mood. While speed is above 56mph the vehicle will somtimes automatically break to 56 mph. When in cruise control this seems to happened when cruise control is disengaged every time. I feel this is a safty concern especially when i try to accelerate but the car will ignore my input and continue to deaccelerate to the economy pro plus 56 speed.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 BMW i3. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE AT A COMPLETE STOP, HIS VEHICLE ACCELERATED INDEPENDENTLY INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC WITHOUT WARNING. After driving short distance on a city street, suddenly car started pulling to the left or to the right side, the steering became very heavy ( it feels like power steering stopped working).
Intermittently while driving, it feels like there are two flat front tires, but they are of proper inflation. Steering pulls one way or the other with no center feel. Feels like you are driving an old truck with loose steering linkage. Unsettling at high speeds or curvy roads. Sensors alert on the dash: pedestrian warning, stability control, and others. This happened once before, and dealer looked at the steering angle sensor, and did an alignment, which resolved for two months.
