2012 Chevrolet VOLT
  • Date of Incident: Jul-28, 2023
  • Date complaint filed: Apr-17, 2024
  • Failed components: AIR BAGS

In september 2019, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe 19-013 to assess the malfunction of the passenger sensing system (pss) in the 2012-2013 chevrolet volt vehicles. Due to that malfunction, the air bag system malfunction indicator light is activated. This could cause the passenger airbag to be suppressed in a crash. In july 2021, the odi closed pe 19-103 after gm instituted a cost reduction program for the repair/replacement of the pss in the subject vehicles. In july 2023, i took my 2012 volt to a local dealer to correct this problem, only to learn that the necessary replacement part has been discontinued by gm and is no longer available. That is, frankly, unconscionable. I am requesting that odi reopen the investigation and take further action to compel gm to make this repair available.

2017 Chevrolet VOLT
  • Date of Incident: Mar-01, 2022
  • Date complaint filed: Apr-17, 2024
  • Failed components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

While driving on the interstate car suddenly flashed a "reduced propulsion power " warning indicator. At this time the car was speed limited and made us a liability on the interstate. We were about 80 miles from our home so ended up driving the car back home being speed limited. Took car into the shop and was told the egr valve was bad which kept causing the "no walk fuse" to blow. Ended up having the egr valve, gasket and cap replaced. All together with labor total for repair was $1,738 on a car that we had only been driving for a year. Bad egr valves seem to be very commonplace for 2nd generation chevy volts but it seems gm refuses to do anything about this issue. I have no plans to every purchase another gm vehicle. Very frustrated!

2021 Chevrolet Malibu
  • Date of Incident: Feb-12, 2024
  • Date complaint filed: Apr-17, 2024
  • Failed components: POWER TRAIN

Warning light appears on dash "shift to park". Car is in park. Engine will turn off, but ignition stays in accessory mode and will run down battery if ignored. Have to wiggle shifter back and forth repeatedly to get the warning light to go away and the ignition to completely shut off. Started as a once in a while occurrence 3 months ago. Now doing this almost every time. Car is a 2021, has 100k miles, so out of warranty. No active recall. There was a recall for 2016-2019 models, and a class action lawsuit but no recall on 2021 model.

While driving vehicle warning light service stabilitrak.... Reduced engine power comes on. Vehicle then slows and can not drive over 20 to 30 mph. This has occurred randomly at highway speeds while driving on interstate in traffic. Sudden reduction caused traffic to have to slow quickly and almost caused a collision.

Shift to park error occurs everytime i put my car into park. It does not turn off and the vehicle remains on until i jiggle the shifter. This has been "repaired" 2x under warranty. Now that it is out of warranty the manufacturer refuses to cover any of the expenses on this known issue with a bulletin per your website (18-na-297).

2014 Chevrolet CRUZE
  • Date of Incident: Apr-16, 2024
  • Date complaint filed: Apr-17, 2024
  • Failed components: POWER TRAIN and ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Various parts of the cooling system have failed on this vehicle multiple times even after under warranty repair (twice in as many years beginning in 2018) at a licensed dealership; and again several more times since, most recently this week. At no point did a chevrolet/gm employee/representative alert me of known common issues, and they even incredulously asked me who did prior repairs when it was indeed, their dealership. In all, nearly every hose been replaced at least three times, reservoir tanks replaced, and thousands of dollars outside of warranty repairs have occurred on the same components. The vehicle has completely blown hoses while driving and filled the cabin with burning, noxious, and sweet smells, and fogged up the windshield with vaporized fluids. Coolant certainly leaks and works it way into the cabin. I was not made aware of any known issues though this appears it is a common problem with this vehicle. Issues with the battery/powder have also plagued this vehicle. It results in the "stabilitrak" failing randomly, electrical issues that causing power failures and disruptions to dashboard lights and components, sound system (including from the radio, to the sounds of the blinker and alerts), and engine power getting cut off. These incidents started occurring after about a year of purchasing the vehicle (certified used) in 2017. It appears the previous owner also faced these problems. I do not currently have paperwork of the repairs but they can be obtained. Date given is of the most recent incident with the first instance occurring in 2018. I also believe this vehicle may be a victim of the airbag defect, causing a possibly premature deployment of the side airs bags only during a front tire collision. Plastic pieces broke off and caused injuries to my scalp and shoulder, though the recall would not be issued for at least 2 years.
