2019 Ford Expedition
  • Date of Incident: Mar-19, 2024

  • Failed components: POWER TRAIN, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, and ENGINE

My Ford Expedition has lost power 4 times requiring me to pull off the Interstate and have the car towed. I have been driving 75-80 mph each time this has happened. It is as if the car takes a big deep breath, and then loses all power. It failed most recently on Halloween 2023, and then again in March of 2024. Prior to these two times, the car has lost power 2 other times. It has always been serviced at a Ford dealership. All three times INCLUDING this last time the dash lights on the car have read, "powertrain failure" and "pre-collision brake assist not available". When it failed in March, even though it registered a code both on my dash and in my Ford Pass App, the dealership said they could not reproduce the problem therefore, there was nothing they could fix. I am scared to get behind the wheel of this car. I also do not want to sell it to anyone else for fear they will have the same problem. Cars don't just lose power while driving 75 mph. It is dangerous and a definite safety concern. It is not like I am driving a pinto. This was a brand new car, is fully paid for, has clean maintenance records, and is an expensive vehicle. It has been well taken care of and should not have power failure four times at only 4 years old. It is terrifying to be driving at high speed and lose power. I have been very lucky to not have caused a secondary accident on the freeway, or been in an accident myself when this has happened.

2017 Ford Escape

  • Date complaint filed: Apr-23, 2024
  • Failed components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING

The headlights on my escape constantly go out. The bulbs are never burnt out but the headlights will not work. I have seen countless Ford Escapes that are the same style (so I assume a similar year) that are driving on the road with the same issue. I’ve had two shops look at it and say the bulbs are not burnt out but could not find the issue. This is a severe safety issue and needs to be recalled.

2017 Ford Escape

  • Failed components: ENGINE and ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

I own a 2017 Ford Escape SE with an eco boost engine. All service of the vehicle was done in the dealership except the tune up. At 100,000 miles, I had a full tune up done on the vehicle. 30 days later, the engine light turned on so I had it checked. The frequency of the light turning on increases. I notice a slight shaking at times when the vehicle was cold. The company that did the tune up told me that they notice the car is loosing coolant but there were no visible leaks. When the coolant is replenished, the light turned off and the car works until one morning it just would not start. I towed the vehicle to the dealership to have it checked. They kept the vehicle for three weeks trying to figure out what was wrong with it since the car was not giving them any codes. They notice the second cylinder bore was corroded and so was the spark plug indicating that there was coolant intrusion into the cylinder bores. The car never gave me any indications of overheating. I spoke to Ford customer care to address the issue and was told I’m out of luck. I had found a letter they sent to me back in 2020 “ Customer Satisfaction Program 19B37. The letter described coolant intrusion into the cylinder bores that can lead to coolant loss, excessive tailpipe smoke, or illuminated malfunction indicator lights ( MIL ) due to engine misfire and could potentially lead to engine damage. Ford dealership said this recall has expired. They diagnosed the issue of the car as engine failure due to coolant intrusion in the engine and quoted me $10,000 to replaced the engine. Upon my research I learned that there’s a class lawsuit again Ford regarding this issue with their eco boost engines. I have a voice message from regional manager of the dealership claiming that all recall on this issue has expired and they can not do anything about it. The fact that the car did not give proper code for its engine light is a safety issue. Please investigate.

Reproduced: vehicle in for abs related faults on dash, which is why it was being pulled into the ford dealer by a senior master ford technician. 2010 Ford ESCAPE
  • Date of Incident: Aug-01, 2023
  • Date complaint filed: Apr-23, 2024
  • Failed components: STEERING

My spouse was lawfully driving at highway speed when the power steering suddenly quit working. This caused an abrupt slowing to a safe stop at the roadside without any steering assist. My spouse was unable to safely continue driving due to inability to operate the steering. My chief concern is under other circumstances this steering failure could have caused a serious accident involving other drivers, maybe even death. The vehicle continues to be inoperable due to the power steering failure.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that coolant intrusion into the cylinders had damaged the engine, requiring a replacement engine. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program 21N12. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 73,000.

My engine started to slow down while driving down even though gas pedal was to the floor on the road at peak hour of traffic at 4pm and was barely moving then my high temperature alert came on my dash board and told me to pull over as soon as possible. Once i pulled over saw that coolant was leaking from my emergency spot on tank. Had to have car towed home and then to deal ship to heritage valley ford in brooklyn ct. I could have been rear end from the back when the engine started to act up which could have cause a accident and i had my kids in the car with me. The dealership confirmed that their was a recall but not a safety recall on it so did not have to fix issue sense not a safety recall. Ford new about the issue of coolant leaking into engine in june of 2022 and told me they did not need to inform me of this issue and could blow engine but not their problem sense not a safety issue. The recall under their csp program is 21n12 and heritage valley auto group confirmed this was the issue with my engine and told me i need a new engine. Yes about two weeks prior my check engine light came on with codes for misfiring in my engine and replaced spark plugs and coil packs and then found out this was a know issue with ford under their csp program.
