  • Date complaint filed: Apr-17, 2024
  • Failed components: VISIBILITY/WIPER

Driver’s side side view mirror moves to a different location each time car is entered/started. Saving pre-set location of mirror does not hold. Even after a repositioning and saving, or repositioning without saving, the mirror on left side is horizontally in a different spot. This is a safety issue as one usually expects mirrors to be where they were left previously using the mirror controls. Car has been into dealer multiple times for a fix which included both software and hardware attempts. Appears to be known problem based on on-line review. Mirror should stay in a fixed position unless driver wants to relocate. If not risk of visibility issue is large.

Under acceleration, there is a knocking/loud rattling sound from both front axles and constant velocity joints. I am a former master technician and this is clearly a serious issue with these axles as they cannot tolerate the huge torque output from the electric motor. This is also a mechanical safety issue as if this issue is not rectified by volvo, the axles could disintegrate leading to loss of control.

We drove this vehicle to a family event in chicago. We pulled the vehicle out of the parking garage and pulled into a downtown street in front of a hotel to load the vehicle up. Once the family was loaded the vehicle up the car would not start it had 700 miles when it failed. We were stuck on a busy street trying to start the car. I called roadside assitance and someone came out with a jump pack, but the battery was not dead. I was in the pouring rain trying to figure out what was wrong. They did hook a computer up to find several faults in the computer. It did also indicate a left turn signal fault. Also talking with roadside assistance the agent said that was the 2nd call he had with no start issue. Finally it did start but the check engine light was on the whole trip home, had to cut our trip short and drove as far as we could in fear the car would not restart. It kept coming back with the left turn signal fault and did not shut off the car even pumping gas in fear of not restarting then all of a sudden with cruise control on the car just jerked itself amd almost pulled us off the freeway. Now it has been at the dealer all week researching forums this seems to be a common issue

During night rainstorm, front and rear wipers, turn signals and high beams all failed. This was the result of a design defect that allows water from panoramic moonroof to drain into the floor where it compromises electrical connections and modules. In addition to potentially catastrophic safety component (wipers, high beams and turn signals) failures, the water damage compromised the seat belts, as well, which also required repairs. Insurance adjuster confided that this is a frequent, common problem. Repairs took 10 days and cost $8700! Both the insurance adjuster and the dealer stated that there is no maintenance procedure an owner can do to avoid this problem.

  • Failed components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING and BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS

There have been several times when slowly backing up when monitoring the mirrors and backup camera that the car had a very violent stop. I wasn't going fast at all and was within two feet of objects that i'm very familiar with. My old car handled backing up fine and didn't stop so violently. The warning on the old car got quicker as i got closer. This volvo does have an increasingly rapid beep too but as you monitor the space it jerks so hard before it's really close enough to hit. This week i was backing up in a parking lot with nothing around me. I was still going slowly but the backup camera picked up an asphalt strip in between two cement pads and jerked so hard i have had whiplash like symptoms right after and ever since. The car stopped so hard my neck snapped back and i hit my head on the headrest. This incident was the most violent but there have been others that are too harsh for the slow moving conditions and insignificance of the objects.

2015 Volvo S60

  • Date complaint filed: Apr-02, 2024
  • Failed components: ENGINE

Alternator belt shredded and got underneath the timing belt causing the engine timing to go off and severe engine damage that i will now have to total the car or spend $13-15k to replace. The car stalled after leaving a stop sign so i wasn't going fast. I spoke to my local mechanic and he had another volvo s60 t5 in his shop with the same issue showing up but that owner was lucky enough to not have the engine destroyed in the process. From what he is saying is that every other car has some kind of timing belt protection that the volvo s60 is missing. In searching the internet this is a very common issue that occurs. I registered a complaint with volvo today.

2023 Volvo C40

  • Date complaint filed: Mar-26, 2024
  • Failed components: SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, and FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS

I am writing to bring to your attention a potentially catastrophic accident involving our leased c40 vehicle that happened on [xxx], 3:30pm. (id [xxx] ) on the above mentioned date, my husband, [xxx] , was parking the c40 in a school parking lot to pick up our grandchild. He experienced an alarming episode of unintended acceleration. Despite his efforts to control the vehicle, the car lurched out of the parking space and rapidly accelerated, veered onto a snowy embankment, ran over a metal post, and stopped only after it rammed into a minivan parked in the school pick-up zone with enough force to push the minivan up on the curb. Regrettably, this accident resulted in injuries to the individual in the minivan who waiting to pick up her preschoolers and required emergency medical attention after the accident. She is presently pursuing legal action against our insurance company for both personal injury and vehicle damage. This accident could have caused far worse injuries since preschoolers were being picked up at this time in the area where the accident occurred. Our c 40 was in one-pedal mode, and during the accident, none of the alarms activated nor did the front emergency braking system work, and the airbag did not deploy even though the car was probably traveling at speeds greater than 10-15 miles/hour upon impact. Disturbingly, upon further investigation, we have uncovered numerous reports indicating similar incidents of unintended acceleration associated with the c40 series. This raises serious concerns about the safety and reliability of this vehicle, not only for us but for all individuals operating or coming into contact with these vehicles. Our insurance company determined that our car was completely totaled, since the ev battery was destroyed by running over the metal post. The driver of the car suffered a concussion and is still suffering from post concussion syndrome 2 months after the accident. She is unable to drive. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C

  • Date complaint filed: Mar-25, 2024
  • Failed components: STEERING and UNKNOWN OR OTHER

A batch of metal used for the steering wheel trim prematurely wears down at the base of the steering wheel in 2 locations out of sight with normal use and becomes razor sharp. When turning the wheel, the spinning razor edge can cause the driver to lose control due to sudden pain due to slicing into the fingers. The metal slices into the skin drawing blood much like that of a papercut. I have experienced sudden cuts in turning on 2 separate occasions recently having to re-grab the steering wheel due to involuntary pain reflex release to prevent total loss of control and the problem has not been confirmed by the dealer. There is no prior warning when this issue suddenly occurs.
