  • Failed components: SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, and FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS

Am writing to bring to your attention a potentially catastrophic accident involving our leased c40 vehicle that happened on january 22, 2024, 3:30pm. (id #240123-000246) on the above mentioned date, my husband, dr. Morris mandel, was parking the c40 in a school parking lot to pick up our grandchild. He experienced an alarming episode of unintended acceleration. Despite his efforts to control the vehicle, the car lurched out of the parking space and rapidly accelerated, veered onto a snowy embankment, ran over a metal post, and stopped only after it rammed into a minivan parked in the school pick-up zone with enough force to push the minivan up on the curb. Regrettably, this accident resulted in injuries to the individual in the minivan who waiting to pick up her preschoolers and required emergency medical attention after the accident. She is presently pursuing legal action against our insurance company for both personal injury and vehicle damage. This accident could have caused far worse injuries since preschoolers were being picked up at this time in the area where the accident occured. Our c 40 was in one-pedal mode, and during the accident, none of the alarms activated nor did the front emergency braking system work, and the airbag did not deploy even though the car was probably traveling at speeds greater than 10-15 miles/hour upon impact. Disturbingly, upon further investigation, we have uncovered numerous reports indicating similar incidents of unintended acceleration associated with the c40 series. This raises serious concerns about the safety and reliability of this vehicle, not only for us but for all individuals operating or coming into contact with these vehicles. Our insurance company determined that our car was completely totaled, since the ev battery was destroyed by running over the metal post. The driver of the car suffered a concussion and is still suffering from post concussion syndrome 2 months after the accident. She is unable to drive.

A batch of metal used for the steering wheel trim prematurely wears down at the base of the steering wheel in 2 locations out of sight with normal use and becomes razor sharp. When turning the wheel, the spinning razor edge can cause the driver to lose control due to sudden pain due to slicing into the fingers. The metal slices into the skin drawing blood much like that of a papercut. I have experienced sudden cuts in turning on 2 separate occasions recently having to re-grab the steering wheel due to involuntary pain reflex release to prevent total loss of control and the problem has not been confirmed by the dealer. There is no prior warning when this issue suddenly occurs.

The engine is burning oil due to a factory design defect in the piston ring design, as verified by volvo through a technical bulletin. In the bulletin, volvo states that there is a free oil consumption test available for up to 100k miles. However, once i brought the car in for the test, they denied doing it for free and did not send any notice by mail. Burning oil can lead to a fire risk and loss of power while driving on the highway, which can cause serious accidents. Their published bulletin confirms the issue. The car has not been inspected, and there are no warning lights.

Hi, i had a 2016 xc90 which has serious safety problems. The sunroof has a factory defect, leaking water into the car and causing failures in electronic systems and airbags. Many other owners have sued volvo and won their cases. Additionally, the issue has been certified by the court, and there are technical bulletins published by volvo addressing the problem. Yes. The water leak can damage entire electronic systems, such as airbags, the start-stop system, braking system, and lidar system. Once water enters any of these systems, it can lead to accidents and fires due to short circuits, posing a deadly risk. This issue can cause accidents or fires. No, but volvo has published a bulletin, and there have been many court cases filed against volvo since 2016. No, the vehicle has not been inspected. It's causing numerous random errors on the dashboard. This issue occurred approximately two weeks after i purchased the vehicle. The car has a factory fault with the windshield wiper or turn signal contact switch, which is causing the inability to use the left/right signal and the wipers. The entire part is factory faulty, rendering the vehicle unable to operate safely. This affects visibility during wet conditions because the wipers cannot be activated due to the malfunctioning switch, which can lead to serious accidents. Additionally, malfunctioning left/right turning signals can also cause serious accidents, as it is a crucial function. Yes, the vehicle is available upon request. I contacted volvo, but they declined to fix the issue. They have published a technical bulletin regarding the problem but are not recalling the vehicles. Many other volvo models have the same factory defect, as can be found on the internet. The technical bulletin confirms their fault. I have attached the file. No, the vehicle has not been inspected. Yes, the vehicle shows a "turn indicator malfunction" message on the main screen. This issue started around 89k miles.

  • Failed components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I stopped at a gas station and the fuel door would not open. I tried multiple times locking and unlocking the vehicle with the key fob. As i was driving home, i stopped at three other gas stations. All three times, i still could not open the fuel door. This happened when i initially purchased the car in 2019. I reported it to the volvo dealer while standing at the gas station. I played with the key fob for about 20 minutes until it finally opened. I remember looking up this issue on the [xxx] and it had been reported numerous times. I stopped in at the volvo dealership near me. When i told them what was happening, they asked if it was a 2024 xc40. So, the problem exists even in the current year's models. The dealership played around with the key fob, then pried the door open, i assume with a screwdriver, and charged me $50. I could have done that when i got home.... For free. There is no option to open the fuel door manually, and there is no option to turn off the fuel door lock - which creates a safety issue! This car runs on gasoline. If i can't fuel my car, i am stuck. There should be an option not to lock the fuel door. I am not worried about anyone siphoning gas. I am worried about traveling on a highway or rural area and not being able to open the fuel door. I guess i'll keep a screwdriver in my car. My 2019 xc40 was the first year the car was introduced. The fact that 2024 models still have the same problem means volvo knows the problem exists. Their mechanics know as well. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6)

  • Failed components: SUSPENSION

Both front strut upper bearings failed with less than 30k miles. Continued noise coming from front end diagnosed as failed left strut, causing left upper bearing and strut to be replaced. Polestar 2, which uses the same assembly and volvo have issues technical journals. Polestar is issuing an upgraded part, though it appears volvo is not. Owner forums comment on this issue and it is well known with volvo. A solution for the front suspension should be implemented under a recall as failure of these parts is premature and seems to represent a manufacturing defect.
